People-powered watchmaking

The first edition of the fabulous X41 project appeared in March 2019. Having already disturbed the hushed world of watchmaking by offering total transparency on origin and costs and by giving the power to our community, we wanted to go even further by making Fine Watchmaking as widely accessible as possible.

The X41 has thrown off the luxury image associated with Fine Watchmaking in favor of focusing on the industry-leading expertise of Swiss watchmakers and the high quality of the components. The result: an exceptional piece with unbeatable magic and value for money.

The first X41s have already spread joy!

Everything is going wonderfully with production of the Edition 4, despite a slight delay due to Covid. Our watchmakers are currently assembling the 297 components that make up this exceptional movement. As for the previous editions, they've already made a lot of people happy. Some of them were even able to visit the workshops and follow the machining of their X41 movement as it happened. Pure joy!

X41 AeroCarbon - high-density aerospace carbon fiber

The AeroCarbon's case is made from a high-density carbon fiber used in aeronautics. Made for us on demand in France, the blocks are made up of over 300 layers, each positioned at 90º to the previous and compacted under 10 bars of pressure in an autoclave oven.

X41 Ti5 - Grade 5 Titanium

Titanium offers the comfortable advantage of being around two times lighter than steel. For this new edition, we've chosen grade 5 titanium instead of the grade 2 previously used. It is more expensive, but it is more resistant to scratches and offers finer detail in the finishing.

What defines a Fine Watchmaking movement?

These are movements made in short production runs (around 50 to 1,000) according to an exclusive design and architecture. They are finished and assembled by hand. The time is typically displayed on the movement, with no dial, in order to showcase the magic of these mechanical sculptures.

X41-type Fine Watchmaking

Short run: ~50 to 1,000/year
Finished and assembled by hand
Advantages: Exceptional pieces, quintessential watchmaking, pure watchmaking art
Disadvantage: High cost ~1'000 $ to 2'500 $

"Standard" movement

Similar production to mass-produced movements, but all handled by the brand itself. Sometimes may be a simple modification of the base of a mass-produced movement.
Production: ~10,000/year
Advantage: Exclusive movement
Disadvantage: High cost ~300 $ to 800 $

Mass-produced

Automated production: ~500,000/year
Advantage: Low cost ~30 $ to 150 $
Disadvantage: Same movement used by many other brands

What is the purpose of the oscillating weight?

So-called "automatic" mechanical movements are fitted with an oscillating weight that recharges the watch through movements of the wrist (no battery). As it oscillates from left to right, the weight rewinds the mainspring, which stores the energy required for the mechanism to function correctly.

Peripheral oscillating weight

Standard oscillating weight

Exclusive peripheral oscillating weight

The peripheral weight fitted to the X41 movement is a true technical feat mastered by only a handful of brands. It allows the movement to be less thick and the mechanism to be more visible.

Reduced thickness of the movement

More transparency to showcase the mechanical beauty

Technical feat mastered by only a handful of brands

Numbered edition

The complexity of the X41 movement and the fact that a significant number of processes are performed by hand mean a relatively long production time. For this reason, X41 watches are only produced in short numbered production runs. Don't miss your chance to pre-order one of the few Edition 5 pieces available.

The X41 watch is more than Swiss Made

For a watch to be Swiss Made, at least 60% of its value must come from Switzerland. The X41 project has reached 90%, therefore surpassing the criteria significantly. Such a large quantity of Swiss components is very rare! And yet the X41 watches will bear no mention of being Swiss Made, as CODE41 has been opposed to this misleading label since the very beginning.

The X41 project means unbeatable magic and value for money.

Total transparency

With our TTO label (Total Transparency on Origin), we've placed transparency at the heart of our approach. We clearly explain the costs of production and the mark-ups required for the project to be profitable, so that we can focus on what we're really passionate about: creating high-quality mechanical watches.

Unbeatable magic and value for money

Fine Watchmaking is associated with the world of luxury. The latter is synonymous with inaccessibility and social standing, which propels prices to artificially high levels. For the X41 movement, we've focused on the industry-leading expertise of Swiss watchmakers and the high quality of the components.

Exceptional movement, exceptional manufacturer

Developing a Fine Watchmaking manufacture movement isn't something you can just improvise. That's why we've called on one of the best designers in Switzerland. Timeless stands out from the rest because they produce all of the components that make up their movements in-house, except for the balance wheel.

No risk, just pure joy

Special 3-year guarantee instead of 2

In the event of a technical issue, your watch will be collected at our expense and repaired as quickly as possible.

Critical components with a history of reliability

Even though the X41 movement has been developed exclusively for our community, the reliability of its critical components was optimized a number of years ago.

If you're not 100% happy with the X41, you have 30 days to return it for free, unused and in its original packaging.

Free cancellation

As long as your order has not yet been dispatched, you can cancel it free of charge at any time.

Frequently asked questions

What are the conditions of cancellation and return?

As long as your order has not yet been dispatched, you can cancel it free of charge or modify your choice of strap, while stocks last. From the date of delivery, you have 30 days to return it free of charge, unused and in its original packaging, to enjoy a full refund.

Do I need to pay import taxes upon receiving my watch?

No. We've implemented a system in our cart that allows your country's respective customs duties and VAT to be calculated and paid automatically. So you won't have to pay anything upon receipt of your watch.

Why do CODE41 watches not feature the Swiss Made label?

For a watch to be Swiss Made, at least 60% of its value must come from Switzerland, its movement must be Swiss, and it must be assembled in Switzerland. That means that a Swiss Made watch can be of great quality while still containing many components from other countries.

In the interests of clarity, we've opted for total transparency and select both Swiss and foreign components for their distinctive nature and high value for money, rather than to meet the criteria of a misleading label. That's why, even though the majority of our models comfortably meet the requirements, we've decided not to affix the Swiss Made label to our watches.

How does the CODE41 pre-order system work?

In order to avoid unsold stock, the gray market and waste, we decided to implement a pre-order system. It seemed more logical to only produce the quantities that have already been sold. Consequently, once or twice a year we launch pre-orders for a new edition over a period of 2 to 4 weeks. Delivery typically takes place 8 to 10 months later. While you wait, we allow you to experience the birth of your watch through liberal amounts of photos and videos.

Is the X41 movement COSC certified?

No. All of our X41 movements are individually tested by our watchmakers in 5 different positions and precision tuned to similar criteria as the COSC. In addition, this certification would lead to an increase of several hundreds of euros in the retail price without adding providing any real added value.

How long does the guarantee last and how does it work?

The X41 watches are covered by a special 3-year guarantee instead of 2 from the date of receipt. In the event of technical problems, all you need to do is contact us and we'll organize both the return transport and repair.

How are the quantities decided for each edition?

For each collection, we decide the per-batch quantity according to our suppliers' monthly production capacity. In the case of the X41 project, this will be 150 pieces per month.

During pre-orders, once the first batch has sold out, a new batch is opened with a delivery date one month later than the former. For each edition, we only produce a maximum of 3 or 4 batches.

Are the straps compatible with all CODE41 watches?

The X41 watches have a lug width of 24mm. The straps are compatible with the ANOMALY-01, ANOMALY-02, ANOMALY EVOLUTION 42mm and NB24 watches. Both the DAY41 37 and 40mm and ANOMALY EVOLUTION 38mm, on the other hand, have a lug width of 21mm and require straps which are not suitable for other models.

So wissen unsere Kunden genau, was sie kaufen.
